Rainy Day Road Trip

Wildcat Manderine / Proven Winner 09

What a sunshine day thanks to the warmth and color found in the greenhouses' I visited on this rainy day. Today's list of local growers to visit from the Maumee Valley Growers members list were all located near the Toledo Airport. First stop today was at Hoen Greenhouse & Garden Center just a short drive off of I-475. What a treat to find this treasure in a location we have driven by so many times not knowing they were existed. At this location I found my Begonia - Bonfire. the Hoen Nursery had 12 / 4 1/2 " pots left when I left this morning if you are interested! I can't wait to show you photos of this annual as it grows in my garden this summer. Please visit my Bonfire blog entry from last summer to get an idea of why this variety of Begonia is a treasure to any garden. I have been told that this and a few of the other new Proven Winner Begonia's that are featured in many of their publications are limited this year.

Hoen Greenhouse & Produce - Sneaker planters and plenty of annuals or perennials to fill them with.

Big selection of everything you need to make a Fairy Garden of your own.

DETOUR over to Creque's after finding a wonderful write up about them on Maumee Valley Growers webpage. Noted for their 3 1/2 acres facility where they grow their superb plants. This greenhouse located in Sylvania Avenue has been in business for 25 years.

Large selection of hanging baskets and containers ready to add spectacular color to your home and garden. I was very impressed with their prices and selection. Annuals that are obviously taken care of at some of the lowest prices in N.W. Ohio (Annuals at $3.79 each 4.1/2 " pot ) . Not sure what to plant this year? Let one of their knowledgeable and friendly staff assist you.

A few snapshots from the Creque's new perennial area.

Check them out at the Mayberry Market in Sylvania from 3 - 7 p.m. Call the Greenhouse for details.

ON TO THE NEXT STOP.........

Just past the Toledo Airport you will find a little roadside market. We founds some wonderful deals here with 6 066 packs of annuals priced at $9.25 each. I can only imagine how these plants will look in a few weeks. NOW is the time to purchase these great deals because it doesn't look like they are merchandised to be carried for in weeks to come. This is truly a ' YOU GET what you pay for' experience.

Last stop of the day was the Loch Farms. At this location I found some great deals on Lantana. They had a dozen other Proven Winners in 3" circle containers for $2.25 a piece. Great deal but not a large selection. I was however impressed with the quality and selection of Veggies and Perennials.

What a great day..... it is going to be a blast sharing all the wonderful things I end up doing with the many treasures I found today. Happy Gardening Friends!

Okay, so now I want 'Bonfire' too!

I'm on Hoen's e-mail list. Not sure how or when, but definitely want to make it up there this summer sometime.

Looks like you had a very fun day! I spread mulch in the rain. LOL

Sonia, the Wildcat details can be found at http://www.provenwinners.com/plants/detail.cfm?photoID=8309&page=5
In my neck of the woods it is an annual in the Anagallis family. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Kylee, I don't think the bonfire will sell fast because they have it merchandised with the shade/ sun items and this beauty does much better in the hot sun area. We had these in the greenhouse I worked at last year in the same location. I took one home just because we had a bunch of them left over and it ended up to be a MUST HAVE this year. I bet your mulch looks great. I will have to swing by your blog to check out your latest garden report.

Hey Bren~~ I don't think I'll be able to hop on a plane and visit your local nurseries but I sure enjoyed reading about your trip. Isn't plant shopping just the ultimate high?? Tessa's blog has the "You know you're a garden if..." The other day it said, "You know you're a gardener if you'd rather shop for plants than clothes."

It looks like you have some really nice commercial greenhouses in your area. I could just lose myself in them for hours. Interesting new plants and wonderful ideas.

Hi Bren, Thank you so much for your visit to my blog and your kind words. I've been browzing through your blog happily recalling what my Illinois garden looked like. I remember the excitement of spring planting. I had such a nice collection of hostas in my garden that my brown thumb did not kill. I love the photo of the fuschia. It is my favorite color, too. I also had 3 different kinds of lilacs which I loved every spring. Sigh...

Hi Bren! Great pictures and information. I wanted to share a link with you to search for local gardening products in every county in Ohio. It is the Buying Local Directory on OurOhio.org. http://ourohio.org/index.php?page=search-the-map . I have been able to find some new gardening treasures through my search. I look forward to seeing more of your great pictures!
