SEEDLINGS - the inexpensive way to garden.

Sunrise in my neck of the woods.... the river water is still up above it's banks so we have some friendly geese and ducks singing the tunes of spring in our temporary lake in the field out front. Someone commented to me yesterday about how I have a positive outlook on just about everything. This person was shocked to find that even when it comes to my yard and local flooding I find the positive in an other wise negative situation. We are blessed and very thankful that the flooding is not effecting us like so many of others in our region. One thing to keep in mind is we do live in the Black Swamp where flooding and wet lands should be expected. We can also focus on positive when it comes to gardening. So many of my garden friends have been hit hard by the economy and worry about the effects it will have on their expense budget for their gardens. NO NEED TO WORRY..... WE WILL SURVIVE! I think I garden best on a budget. I hope to share my experience with you in the next few weeks.

Super excited yesterday to lift off the container of my recycled 'greenhouse' seed starter kit and find that we have some wonderful seedlings. LOOK HOW THE DIRT is being lifted up from those sprouts shooting through to the warm light. LOVE IT!!!! Can you feel the excitement? ANYONE CAN DO THIS!
NOTE - this is the container that was originally used with those little soil pods. I filled the container 3/4 with good organic potting soil and planted in that a little over a week ago.

I am going to give it a few days before plucking some of the seedlings out. You need to allow the herb room to grow without crowding them. I might try and 'transplant' some of those sprouts that I pluck out into a 3 1/2 " pot.

THIS IS JACK...
He is my little male buddy that I adopted back in the late summer of 2008. I love him to death. This could possibly be the sweetest little lover boy kitty ever! Could be because he is spoiled and he has the luxury of sleeping on my wicker in the enclosed breezeway of our home. While it is not heated he is still 'inside' compared to the Farm Cats that are apart of our family. I grow a fondness to the animals we have rescued and adopted over the six years we have lived here. This little guy came from the city and I take extra care of him because I don't think he could handle all the elements of living in the woods at night on our property. This little guy would run up to a raccoon or fox and give it a hug! :-) Jack is only allowed outside during the day. I need to make up a special section on this blog about my cats because they are such an important factor in our garden.

OFF TO DOCUMENT SOME MORE CHEAP PLANTING!!! YOU CAN have a beautiful garden on a low budget. I am going to prove that too you all so keep following me along my gardening journey.

Bren, you sure have a lot of seedlings coming up. Isn't it such fun when they begin to sprout. Your kitty is so pretty. Recycling can be fun.

Being out of work I have been thinking about the flowers I usually buy. If you start them now when is it okay to plant outside if I'm in CT.

we have a lot of the same going on in our lives. we moved to the country a few years ago. we have a black kitty. we are growing our own seedlings. we have a veggie garden and flower garden. our front of our property floods sometimes too and stays pretty wet during rainy season.
that is alot of similarities. your sunrise is beautiful over the temporary water.
i bet our two kitties would get along, our jade is so sweet too.
how do you decide which one of the seedlings you are going to keep or which ones you will get rid of?
i have been researching doing a wetland type of planting in the front where we get so much moisture.
hope you have a great weekend and take care of those baby sprouts.

I love Jack! We used to have a cat that looked identical to him. I am definitely a low budget gardener...and I think it is working so far!

Queen Size Funny bone - I am not familiar with CT. gardening but I do have a great site for you to look up to figure what ZONE you are in. IF you go to : USNA / USDA PLANT HARDINESS ZONES at: http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html
You can find out what planting zone you are in. This is very important because you will need to know this for transplanting or planting your garden. The general rule is to plant the seeds when all dangers of FROST have passed.
I am getting a head start this year and saving money by starting my seeds indoors this year because I can't plant outside till May.

Marmee - I try to give the plant / sprout at least a 1/2" spacing. This is how I decide which ones to pluck!

Happy FRIDAY!!!

That's a beautiful sunrise and I love Jack. My hubbie is allergic so I don't have any kitties but I still adore them.

I too have some seedlings I planted earlier. I actually used egg cartons for plant the seeds in. I get very excited to see little seedling showing their faces.

Your seedlings look great! It's so fun to see them grow. I agree, it really will help to save money. Something I know pretty much everyone is trying to do now.
Your "lake" pictures are very pretty!

Hi Bren,
I love it when the little seedlings come up, too. I haven't been consistent with starting seeds inside lately, but hope to this year.

I have a tip for you. When I need to thin, after deciding which one to keep, I snip the ones closest to it with scissors or pinch them off at the base so the roots of the one I'm keeping aren't disturbed.

Our daughter has a black cat, but he is more of a crabby character. He likes me, but snarls at my husband.

I'm looking forward to your other installments on gardening on a budget.

Thanks again, for your nice comments on my blog.

Hi Brenda~~ I've heard that seed companies are having a hard time keeping them in stock with the economy tanked and people looking for ways to save money. Hopefully the trend will continue and people will enjoy gardening rather than think of it as a chore.

Love your kitty. We adopted a rescued cat last summer. She is the absolute loving-est cat we've ever had.

Anyway, glad to hear the flooding is not affecting you. Cheers.

Here's hoping the floods pull back without doing more damage.

I left you a message over at Blotanical--in fact, so have several others, if you do come by there sometime.

Well this is a beautiful blog and I enjoyed your sun pictures. We must be on the same wavelength as I posted about it too.

I do love positive people and so nice to meet you. And look at your seedlings! I've got some too but mine are not doing that well. It's been too cold for them. I have them in the garage. I know better--just don't have room anywhere else. They are by a nice warm window. The cosmos seem to be doing OK.

Jack is pretty handsome and does look like a camera ham. I look forward to hearing more about him. Welcome to blotanical!

YOU CAN have a beautiful garden on a low budget!!
Yes yes of course.
Most plants in my garden I have got from friends, family, neighbors.
And then I have saved money to buy very special plant that I liked.
Last your I was back to school and did " a gardening school" and at school we did a lot seeds planting - so more cheap plants to my garden.

Lot of water in the garden I see - and like you said no worries as long the water do not come into you house.
Nice sunset photo
